What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medical therapy that uses very small doses of medicines, or remedies.

These remedies are prepared from substances found in nature. The homeopath chooses

the proper remedy by following a special rule of nature. This rule is called the Law of Similars.

This law states "like cures like," or that a medicine can cure a sick person if it can cause similar

sickness in a healthy person. For instance, if you peel an onion, your eyes burn, itch and water.

You might also have a runny nose and begin to sneeze. If you had similar symptoms during a cold

or allergy attack, such as a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing, a homeopathic micro-dose of

the remedy Allium cepa (red onion) would help your body heal itself.

The word "homeopathic" is derived from the Greek words homeos meaning "similar" and pathos meaning "disease" or "suffering." Thus, homeopathy means "to treat with a remedy that produces an effect similar to the disease or suffering."

Homeopathic Consultations (120-150 mins / $299-$379)

Typical initial homeopathic consultations take between 2 and 2.5 hours to complete.  During the consultation, we will educate you on the principles of homeopathy, how to understand the types of remedies available for purchase at your local health food store, and how they are proposed to help you.  At the end of the consultation, we will discuss the remedies that seem to be a good "match" for you.  We do not prescribe remedies for your condition, but will help you understand which remedies available at your local health food store may be beneficial to you.  We will also provide you with educational materials for further reading at home.

Because Homeopathy addresses the “whole” being, the more information that you can provide me about yourself will help me in my understanding of your condition.  It will also aid me in my ability to more precisely find the remedy that is a good “match” for you.

Follow Up Consultations (45 mins / $75)

If you do decide to try a homeopathic remedy, during the time you are taking the remedy regular follow-up consultations are strongly recommended. They will help us understand your progress and your response to the remedy.  Even when you are doing well or continuing to make progress, it is important to keep your follow-up appointment. The follow-up appointment will help nurture the healing process by keeping us up to date and help us understand how to educate you on adjusting your usage to get the best benefit. This is also a time to discuss things that happened during the “in between” of your appointments. If you kept notes during this time, the follow-up is the best time to share them.  Everything is important when you are on a remedy.

The reason the first appointment is so long is to give us a baseline from which to work with you, and each follow-up appointment will help us see your progress and understand whether or not your remedy should stay the same or needs to have some changes made to it.

The follow-up visits are scheduled at varying intervals or as needed. Usually, they go anywhere from three weeks to six months depending upon the individual characteristic of each person’s progress.

Although you may be taking homeopathic remedies for as long as two years, (sometimes more,) it is important to keep in mind that the ultimate goal of homeopathy is to reach a high level of health and allow our bodies to take care of its needs naturally.

Homeopathic FAQs and Educational Information
General Information

Homeopaths are interested in knowing who you are on all levels. The practice of Homeopathy does not just compartmentalize physical conditions in a client. Homeopathy goes beyond the physical being, and examines all aspects of the human condition, including emotional, mental and spiritual aspects that make you up as a person. It is therefore very important that in your consultation, I get as complete a picture as I can of you. All of the information gathered is vital to helping understand which remedy may be the best “match” for you. Here are some things to consider sharing during our first appointment:

  • How vital and energetic do you feel?

  • How does your sense of well-being change as a result of environmental or emotional factors?

  • How are you affected in general by temperature, weather, time of day, activity level, eating and sleeping?

  • What makes you feel better or worse?

In addition to information about your primary condition(s), we do consider your overall assessment of your health, emotions, likes, dislikes etc., etc.

Hering’s Law of Cure

  • Healing progresses from within toward without; from the deepest level, (mental and emotional) to external (skin and extremities)

  • Healing progresses in reverse order of the original appearance

  • Healing progresses from above down; from upper parts of the body to lower parts

You may notice different things happening and have no idea it is part of the remedy working. Keep a record of anything you notice that might not be “normal” for you, and go over it with me on our follow-up consultation.

Is Homeopathy New?

The Law of Similars has been known since at least the time of Hippocrates (ca. 400 B.C.), but it was Samuel Hahnemann who fully stated the ideas of homeopathy in the early 1800's. He was a doctor and a chemist in Germany who lived from 1755 to 1843. He discovered the truth of the Law of Similars by testing small doses of medicine on himself.

By 1900, about twenty percent of doctors in the United States were homeopaths, but due to various political and social changes, homeopathy had become relatively unknown in this country until recently. There is wider acceptance of homeopathy in such countries as France, Germany, Mexico, Argentina, India and Great Britain. In fact, the family doctor to England's Queen Elizabeth is a homeopathic physician.

What are Homeopathic Remedies?

Any plant, mineral or animal substance can be used as a remedy. The original substance is diluted in liquid repeatedly, and vigorously shaken with each dilution. Unusual as it sounds, these very small amounts of remedies can act very strongly when used properly. Also, because the remedies are very diluted, they are extremely safe. The clinical experience of homeopathy shows that the micro-dose is effective: It works upon comatose people, infants and animals.

What to expect during a visit to a homeopath?

You will be asked to describe all your problems in detail as well as a complete description of everything that characterizes you, especially your feelings, sensations, sensitivity, psyche, and all that concerns your organism in terms of energy, sleep, appetite, digestion, etc.

Which diseases can be helped with homeopathy?

This may sound strange but homeopathy is not used to treat diseases but support the person who is sick. Whether a person has a chronic or an acute disease, all of their symptoms, whether physical, mental or emotional form a whole representing a state of imbalance very specific to this individual. The goal of homeopathy is to recognize through the unique expression of symptoms of a person, the pattern of disturbed energy and identify among the great number of remedies available the one most homeopathic, or most similar to, the person's condition.

Which conditions are outside the scope of homeopathy?

If a patient has a problem that necessitates a surgical intervention, the homeopath will be the first to refer this person to a surgeon. But as surgical interventions are a shock to the organism, homeopathic remedies can be ideal to prepare the person for surgery and help them recover from the operation. Of course, cases with dislocation or fracture will be dealt with by an orthopedic doctor. For less serious mechanical physical problems, clients will be referred to a chiropractor, osteopath, massage therapist or other appropriate therapist. Generally, people afflicted with genetic, congenital, or fixed metabolic diseases or with very advanced degeneration cannot always expect full recovery, but more often a palliative relief with homeopathy, free of side effects usually expected when palliation is done with modern drugs.

Note:  The practice of homeopathy is illegal in the state of Florida.  We do not prescribe homeopathic remedies... but we do provide you with an understanding of the what homeopathy is, available homeopathic remedies, and the conditions for which you may use them on your own.

What has been the position of conventional medicine towards homeopathy?

Since the beginning, conventional medicine has tried to halt the progress of homeopathy. At best, it accuses it of giving "placebos" despite double blind studies which demonstrate the absolutely undeniable efficacy of homeopathic treatments. If homeopathy is so extraordinary, why is it not recognized universally? Although homeopathy has been practiced for more than two hundred years, it is still in its early period of growth. It is probably the most difficult medical discipline to master because it is based on the pure observation of nature, and the strict application of a natural law. Until very recently, of all the physicians who had studied homeopathy, only a very small minority had succeeded in mastering this discipline. Today with the general disillusionment in conventional medicine, homeopathy is beginning to bloom again and spread throughout the world. People find in homeopathy a system of medicine that not only displays more common sense by its respect for the whole person, but which is also more efficient in restoring health to the sick since it optimizes the extraordinary innate self-healing powers of the organism. With the advent of modern communication, the teaching of homeopathy has improved and a better comprehension and practice of homeopathy has been observed in certain circles.
